The book is devoted to the problem of psychological forecasting of the state, behavior, effectiveness of combat activities and the success of the military-professional adaptation of people in the conditions of modern war. For the first time in Russian literature, based on a historical approach, the emergence and development of the problem of psychodiagnostics of people"s abilities, as well as theoretical, methodological and experimental approaches to their study (from the end of the XIX to the beginning of the XXI century), is analyzed in detail. The experience of the practical application and effectiveness of professional psychological selection in the armies of leading foreign countries and in the Soviet Army is summarized. In the second and third parts of the book, the author provides the results of his own studies performed during the Afghan War (1979-1989), after the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (1986), in the process of rescue operations after the Spitat earthquake (1988) and the Ufa railway catastrophe (1989) The last three events are considered as models of the use of weapons of mass destruction with large human victims.
