The work analyzes the most general psychological and socio-psychological sources and mechanisms of corruption. A brief historical overview of measures and methods for combating corruption in the Russian state from the 16th to the 20th centuries is carried out. Economic and social factors contributing to corruptions are described, and also summarizes modern experience in combating this phenomenon in democratic countries. The author for the first time introduces the idea of "psychological corruption" as an non -economic component of readiness for corruption behavior.
