Mathematics, unlike other disciplines, is universal and extremely accurate. It creates the logical structure of all natural sciences. The “incomprehensible effectiveness of mathematics”, as E. Wigner once determined this phenomenon, is warmly discussed in the scientific environment from the time of Plato, but he was not found an explanation.
The author, for the first time in the history of the study of this issue, is trying to approach him from the standpoint of Neuronauki. The book describes the anatomical and physiological mechanisms underlying abstract thinking and formal logic. It is shown that these mechanisms inevitably lay errors in any model that creates the crust of the brain, and make it in principle incapable of ideal logical constructions. Further, the emotional and bodily aspects of the thinking process are discussed, which not only participate in the search for a solution to problems, but also correct the errors of formal cognitive schemes, thus giving us the opportunity to comprehend mathematical truths.
The second edition is supplemented by information about the innate, intuitive perception of the number and the discussion about what it can be influenced by the development of mathematical thinking.
The book is designed for a wide range of readers who are interested in the work of the brain and the nature of abstract thinking. It is written in an easy and accessible language, does not contain formulas and does not require special technical or humanitarian education
