R. Fairburn (1889-1965) - together with M. Klein and D. Winnikott - is one of the founders of the theory of object relations, in which the development of the personality is based on the experiences of the baby in his early relationships within the family environment, and not on the discharge of intensive stresses, generated exclusively within the individual, as was characteristic of the classical Freudian point of view. The danger that he reacted to was imperceptibly creeping human dehumanization in the absence of any adequate description of his nature at the personal level.
According to J. Suserland, Fairburn was the first among psychoanalysts to propose in a systematic form a Copernician change in the foundations of a psychoanalytic theory of development of the human personality. He replaced the point of view of the science of the 19th century, which studied the closed system, the concepts of an open system, the development of which by the middle of the 20th century was associated with attempts to explain the development of living organisms, in which the contribution of the concomitant environment had to take into account all the time.
