Before us, in which the works of Z. Freud are collected, in one form or another regarding the issues of religion and religious practices. Reflections on the origin of religion occupy a large place in Freud’s works, however, having seen a more cloth, it will become obvious that religious practices themselves are not interested in Freud, but more like “side” thoughts in a large project - the formation of the theory of psychoanalysis. Since the discovery of mental reality and the transition from the theory of seduction to considering the role of fantasy in the mental formation of the subject, historical truth as a result of a detective investigation has lost its value for Freud. Instead, he is busy with the study of the space of fantasy - the space of the unconscious, whose work is very distorted by the action of his own sexual impulses.

Freud actively reflects on the origin of religion and the role of symbolism in the period 1910-1914. Occult practices that were common at that time: meeting sessions with the spirits of the dead, fortune telling, predictions of the future, and their popularity will prompt Freud to think about magical thinking and mental omnipotence. He will find the transition from animism and magic to more complex and symbolically developed forms of religious practices. This idea - the rejection of magical thinking in monotheism - will continue to develop in the work “Man Moses and Monotheistic Religion”, which was started by Freud around 1934 and saw the light in 1939, a few months before his death. In the work of Moses, Freud seeks to discover universality and describe it as a design that gives the meaning of the course of events in the myth. Of course, finding universality Freud does not affirm it as the only possible, but rather reflects on constructions that could satisfy the search for meaning. Here we see the return of the idea of the fate of drives, only at the community level: to realize the drives of the whole community of people, it is necessary to adopt a law, the formation of a structure that will restrain the attraction.

In each of the works presented in the 17th volume, Freud makes attempts to explain religious phenomena scientifically, avoiding occultism. Scientific = psychoanalytic. To do this, he needs to supplement the psychoanalysis apparatus with concepts that can explain what is happening. The conceptual apparatus of the psychology of religion, thus, will include the attraction, trauma, symbolization, historical truth, the design of the myth, but at the same time, the psychology of religion also involves the already well -known issues of the realization and fate of drives, omnipotence, mental reality, symbolism, which, according to The essence remains in the territory far from mysticism - the territory of the unconscious.
