The Psalter is a book included in the Bible, consisting of 150 songs or psalms. In the Orthodox Church, the Psalter is used more than any other sacred book in worship. There is a tradition of reading the Psalms over the body of a deceased Christian before burial. The reading is done standing if possible, continuously, day and night, if there are multiple readers, and family and close ones should at least occasionally join in prayer. If it is difficult to organize the reading of the Psalms directly over the deceased, the time of day can be divided, and each person can read at home at their own time. Recommended for publication by the Publishing Council of the Russian Orthodox Church.
