One of the most famous novels in the history of Russian science fiction.
Mari gets a job at a private clinic, where she quickly begins to suspect that its director, Professor Kern, is involved in dark dealings. It seems that his success in science is not due to his own talent. The head of Professor Kern's department died under strange circumstances, but Mari discovers that Professor Dowell did not actually die... Well, not entirely.
Herbert Wells himself spoke admiringly of this novel, first published in 1925. The book has been translated into many languages and in 1984 served as the basis for a Soviet film adaptation.
Recommended for middle school age.
