During the Second World War, an unusual unit struck terror into the hearts of Hitler's and Mussolini's soldiers in North Africa and Italy. Emerging out of nowhere, these daring men would simultaneously attack the enemy from multiple positions, set fire to warehouses and airfields, and force entire garrisons to surrender. These fighters were led by a Russian emigrant of the second generation, Vladimir 'Popski' Peniakov, who had formed his own battalion under the wing of the British armed forces to sow fear and despair behind enemy lines. The first-ever published memoirs of Peniakov in Russian, 'Popski's Private Army,' are a chilling account written by an adventurer and a gentleman, depicting friendships with Arab Senussi, grueling journeys through deserts and mountains, mockery of the army's stupidity, valor, and deadly danger, all forming the components of one of the most remarkable stories of the Second World War.
