In this book, written by one of the prominent logicians of philosophy, it is argued that many of the basic assumptions commonly used in logic, the foundations of mathematics, and metaphysics need to be changed. Thus, in this book, which is crucial for the logical theory and philosophy of mathematics, Jaakko Hintikka proposes a new basic first-order logic and uses it to study the foundations of mathematics. This new logic allows logicians to express concepts such as "equinumerosity," "infinity," and "truth" at the first-order level in the same language. The famous results of Gödel and Tarski, which have dominated this field for the past sixty years, turn out to be much less significant than previously thought. All ordinary mathematics can, in principle, be carried out at this first-order level, which helps avoid all problems associated with the existence of sets and other higher-order objects.
