Assistant district attorney Rusty Sabich has made a successful career, but his personal life has not worked out. Tired of strained relations with his wife, he starts a short-lived affair with his colleague - young and ambitious assistant Carolyn. The situation changes abruptly when Carolyn is unexpectedly murdered. Taking on the investigation of her death, Rusty tries to muddy the waters. However, when their affair stops being a secret, Sabich goes from investigator to the main suspect and ends up in the defendant's seat. Trying to prove his innocence, Rusty turns to the capable lawyer Sandy Stern, who can work miracles, with whom he has faced off in court more than once. In 1990, the novel served as the basis for the film of the same name starring Harrison Ford and Raúl Juliá.
