The study of the Ryazan-Oka culture (KROM) and other cultures of the East European Plain from the 4th to the 10th centuries has been ongoing for over 100 years. The main area of the Ryazan-Oka cultural circle is the Middle Oka region, with a significant tendency towards dominance in the Volga-Oka interfluve. The Ryazan-Oka center, along with the Staroladozhskiy center, can be considered as one of the points where the foundations of ancient Russian statehood were laid. The authorial team of the collection sets the task of clarifying the issues of state formation in the Volga-Oka interfluve based on DNA data and the study of important cultural artifacts - cross-shaped fibulae of the Ryazan-Oka elite and other types of "Oka" fibulae. The research linked the genesis of fibulae to the shores of the Baltic and North Seas (including Scandinavia), which DNA data may also indicate. The authors raise the question of the interconnection (of population and material culture) of the Volga-Oka interfluve, the northwest of the present territory of the Russian Federation, and the Baltic region during the Great Migration Period. The population could have had Finnish, East Germanic, Baltic, or early Slavic linguistic affiliations. The collection also includes works by scientists from the early 20th century: the unique manuscript of D.P. Dementyev-Barmin about the Vetluzh people and the Merya people, and a reprint of F.Ya. Seleznev's 1926 article on the archaeology of the Merya tribe. Both scientists were significant representatives of the local history movement of the early 20th century, preserving certain traditions of Russian chroniclers.
