Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky (1821–1881) was a Russian writer, philosopher, and publicist, one of the most widely read authors in the world. His works influenced many thinkers of the 20th century, including Jean-Paul Sartre and Friedrich Nietzsche. Having gone through a complex life path, he gifted the world with numerous works, the distinguishing feature of which can be described as an unbearably deep sadness of the truly Russian soul. In Dostoevsky's first published novel, "Poor Folk," a special emphasis is placed on the hero, who was highly popular in the years when Dostoevsky was just starting his writing career, the "little man." His troubles may seem insignificant compared to global catastrophes, but he tries to live each moment to the fullest, despite the awkwardness of his situation. He takes care of the unfortunate girl Varenka Dobroselova, trying to make her life less sad through his literary attempts in letters, as he lacks the means to change her dependent position. His tragedy largely lies in the fact that he is so insignificant that he cannot help anyone, not even himself.
