Here is one of the most famous English novels of the 1920s, which was enthusiastically read by Ivlin V and Graham Green, Herbert Wells and Oldos Huxley. In this tragicomic, with elements of autobiography of the story of the Anglo-Belgian family in Siberia during the Civil War and the Allied intervention, all the vivid features of the William Gerhardi style (1895–1977) were intertwined-a mixture of comedy and pathos, melancholy and farce, satire and deep lyricism. A whole swarm of the most bizarre personalities passes before our eyes - depressive officers, obsessions, crazy priests, crazy satires - the world of Gerhardi is shocatan and disoriented, ridiculous and ridiculous, and full of brightest expectations. This is a world in which a huge meaningless massacre has just ended, but everyone feels that this will not end. Hence the tragedy atmosphere of the novel, its caustic irony and stoic philosophy, bringing it closer to the works of other authors of the “lost generation”.
