The book by the prominent historian of the Russian diaspora, Dmitry Rasovsky, includes three interconnected works dedicated to the Turkic peoples who roamed the Black Sea steppes in the 9th-13th centuries. The first to arrive here from the Volga region were the Pechenegs, followed by the Torks, Berendeis, and several other tribes, about whom little is known besides their names. Later, the Polovtsians appeared and displaced some of their Turkic kin to Bulgaria and Hungary, while others settled in the border regions of Rus, where Russian princes accepted them into military service. Under the collective name of the Black Klobuks, these Turks played a significant role in the life of Russian principalities in the 12th century and sometimes even determined who would rule in Kiev. All of this is recounted in Dmitry Rasovsky's book.
