The study of A.V. Shumkina is dedicated to one of the most mysterious stories of the history of the peoples of Russia - to clarify the origin and early history of the Turkic societies of the Central Caucasus. The author begins his study with the review of the formation of historiography of the problem, showing how the knowledge of the Turkic societies gradually accumulated and the basis for the scientific understanding of this information was formed. The main part of the study is the consideration and, as far as few available sources allow, the restoration of historical roots of the ruling surnames of the Central Caucasian aristocratic clans, and with them the corresponding ethnic communities. An analysis of the genealogies of noble surnames is accompanied by a comparison of the information contained in them with reliably known historical characters and events
