The “era of great shocks” introduces the reader to the last decades of the Cold War in the non -trivial light of energy policy. Oil crises of the 1970s. marked the release of the energy problem for the advance of world politics and became an essential factor in the change of bipolar order. The book shows how different the United States and European countries responded to challenges of energy shocks, what role the third world states began to play in the world arena and how the organization of exporters of oil (OPEC) influenced the dynamics of settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict. The energy ties between the USSR and Western Europe went through the same stages of ups and falls as the discharge policy that determined the relationship between the West and East in the 1970s. Significantly intensified, they became the object of “sanctions diplomacy” amid a return to the classical Cold War in the early 1980s
Based on declassified documents from a dozen Russian and foreign archives, the author has formed a diplomatic mosaic that determined the energy and political appearance of our time.
