This is the most famous work of the Russian folklorist and ethnographer, professor of Moscow University Ivan Mikhailovich Snegirev. In 1840, the Academy of Sciences awarded the author for this essay the Demidov Prize, and Emperor Nicholas I presented a diamond ring. The Russian holidays originating in deep pagan antiquity to this day are alive among the people, they are loved and widely celebrated. The main merit of Snegirev is that he began to look at these important manifestations of practical folk wisdom from a scientific point of view, drew attention to the ratio with similar characteristics of other peoples, pointed out the borrowing of some of these latter and tried to place them in a certain order according to anthropological and historical considerations.
