One of the most tense in the post-Soviet space became Russian-Ukrainian relations. Kyiv, who, from the very beginning, relied on the construction of an ethnocratic state, did not intend to actively participate in post -Soviet integration associations.
This was accompanied by the desire of Kyiv to capture as much of the Soviet inheritance as possible. The focus of tension between the two countries was the problem of Crimea. The book discusses the role of Crimean problems, inextricably linked with the status of the Black Sea Fleet in various periods of interstate relations, analyzes attempts to Ukrainize Crimea by Kyiv and the response actions of pro -Russian social movements and organizations. Particular attention is paid to the agreement on friendship, cooperation and partnership between the Russian Federation and Ukraine, signed on May 31, 1997 ("Big Treaty"), which was supposed to become, but did not become a turning point in the relations of the two states. The policy of balancing between Russia and the West, carried out, with one degree of sequence, various presidents of Ukraine, ended with the tragic events of February 2014, related to the coup in Kyiv, the reintegration of Crimea in the Russian Federation and the emergence of the Donetsk and Lugansk republics
