The monograph is a historical and cultural study of problems associated with the comprehension of the sign nature and the types of functioning of the traditional female costume of Mordovians. An attempt is made to create a holistic picture of the use of folk clothing in Mordovian public and family customs and rites. A special emphasis is on its ethno -social functions. The reader has the opportunity to get acquainted with new archival materials, as well as field observations made by the author during expeditions to various regions of Mordovian residence.
