The book, written by two famous St. Petersburg ethnographers, is devoted to the study of the characteristics of the thinking of the ancient Far Eastern people - Ainu, who retained until the middle of the 20th century. Beliefs and rituals, the origins of which go back to the Neolithic. This ethnos, having long been living on the islands - Sakhalin, Hokkaido and the Kuril ridge (next to the Tungus -Manchu and Nivhas, Japanese, Koryaks), was engaged in fishing, hunting and agriculture. The religious life of Ainu is based on a kind of pantheistic worldview, most clearly imprinted in a bear festival, a cult of ancestors and shamanistic practice. An important role was played by worn out and ornamented ritual objects, with the help of which, through prayer and roaring with a sacred drink, a connection with the gods was carried out. The book analyzes the functions, form, iconography of sacred objects based on the collections of the Russian ethnographic museum. To disclose the semantics of the plots carved on them, special attention is paid to the mythology of Ainu.
