On a rich historical and ethnographic material, the author considers the role that bread plays in the traditional worldview of the Slavs. It attracts information collected in different parts of the Slavic world, turns to Indo -European sources. Nikolai Fedorovich Sumtsov (1854-1922) - Russian and Ukrainian ethnographer, literary critic, art historian, museum figure. He defended in 1885 a doctoral dissertation "Bread in rites and songs".
