Who, how and why organizes a funeral in modern Russia? What shadow schemes reign in the market of ritual services? Why did painting fences, cleaning graves and repair of monuments replaced the traditional memorial rite? And what are Russian funerals in general? To answer these questions, social anthropologist Sergei Mokhov acted as the observer included, collected an extensive field material and described the functioning of the domestic ritual market. However, the author did not limit himself to objectivist methods: he introduces the reader with personal history - the mormal chronicle of his own family.
The heavy tread of Russian death is familiar to everyone: who did not hear the stories about the unclean workers of the morgue, not the rural cemeteries, which in verification turn out to be agricultural lands, about corpses lying on the floor of the morgue and rotting in hearse bells, etc. It is possible that chaos is the second name of our funeral industry, but how did it become such, to whom its eternal dysfunctionality is beneficial and, finally, why does it still work?
