Opening his famous historical cycle with the book “Ancient Russia”, George Vernadsky set himself the task of telling about the processes that occurred in the territory of future Russia for several hundred years, which preceded the emergence of the Old Russian state in the 9th century. By bit, attracting Byzantine, Latin, Slavic, Arab, Persian, Armenian, Anglo -Saxon and other sources, he created a voluminous picture in which, along with the Slavs, there was a place for the Sarmatians and Goths, the Huns and Alans, Avars, Khazars, Bulgarians, and Scandinavians. As well as the empires that existed at that time - Byzantium, the Frankish state, the Turkic Kaganate and the Arab Caliphate. The pre-state period of Russia, according to Vernadsky, is an organic part of Russian history, which does not begin with the Varangians, but with the Ants and the early tribes of Russia, which have Iranian-Slavic origin
