Alexander Afanasevich Potebnya (1835-1891)-an outstanding Russian philologist-Slavist and philosopher. The first major theorist of linguistics in Russia, he stood at the origins of historical grammar, semiotics, sociolinguistics, linguistic poetics, ethnopsychology. Corresponding member of the Imperial St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, his name is bearing the Institute of Linguistics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The book conducts a comparative analysis of Christmas and wedding ceremonies among the Slavic peoples, the image of Baba Yaga and its possible correlates is understood, the images of a snake, a wolf and a witch are analyzed.
