The monograph gives a characteristic of Roman society and the most important social problems of the II - beginning of the 1st century. BC e., the social composition and goals of the political parties of that time were identified.
For the first time in Soviet historiography, an analysis of the main classes of Roman citizenship (Senate, Horseman, plebs) and the structure of the Senate is given. The basic concepts on the party struggle of the late republic have been criticized, an opinion was expressed about the presence of three main political movements in Rome: aristocracy, middle layers and small plebs.
The book considers the political activity of three large historical figures of the II century. BC E.: Scipio of the eldest, Cato of the censor and Scipio Emilian, their political position was characterized, the background of the long struggle of Scipio of the Elder and Cato is revealed, and the social role of Scipio Emilian is determined. The monograph also presents portraits of some prominent figures of the Golden Age. The translation of fragments of speeches by Mark portion of Cato is given.
