In 1998, Vasily Kononov (1923 - 2011) - a participant in the anti-fascist resistance movement, a citizen of Latvia - a criminal case was initiated on charges of committing military crimes. Two years later, 77-year-old veteran by the decision of the Latvian court was sentenced to six years in prison in a closed prison. For the first time for war crimes, not a Nazi accompanier was convicted, but partisans who fought with the invaders. No matter how monstrously sounded, a precedent was created, which can be used to criminalize any of the participants in the resistance movement who fought in France or Belgium, Poland or Italy as part of the forces of the anti-Hitler coalition
