The fundamental work of A.N. Afanasyev is a logical culmination of a whole series of his works on history, literature, poetics, mythology, as a result of which a conceptual view of mythology, its origin and history has emerged. The 19th century became a time of intensive study of Slavic mythology, during which the tradition of interpreting Slavic mythology from the perspective of the "natural mythological school" was formed, a view shared by Afanasyev. Representatives of this school believed that mythology arose from attempts by humans to explain natural phenomena. The founder of the solar-meteorological school, A.N. Afanasyev, proceeded from the idea that myth is the "oldest poetry" that tells about the life of nature in its "daily and annual transformations". The collective poet and creator of mythology was the people, who created both language and myths." From the author's point of view, mythology "arose in the sky" from the deification of celestial natural phenomena, but then "descended to earth, taking on the most whimsical forms, which is why all kinds of narratives about what is happening in this world are saturated with images of all kinds of "uncleanliness". The author uses data from various fields as material: the epic of different peoples, fairy tales, the works of linguists, dialectologists, pays attention to legislative acts, provincial periodicals. Light, darkness, sky, earth, sun, thunderstorm, wind, rainbow, rain, evil dwarfs, witches, water spirits, forest spirits, and other modifications of good and evil elements - all are analyzed by the author taking into account the scientific knowledge of his time. Thanks to the concept, methodology, and material used, the work turned out to be encyclopedic, where all possible ways of representing nature and the manifestations of collective spiritual work are recorded.
