The name and poetry of Heinrich Heine (1797 - 1856) have long been known and appreciated in Russia. It is enough to say that Heine's poems were translated by Tyutchev, Lermontov, Fet, Ap. Grigoryev, Blok, Tynyanov... There is extensive literature in Russia dedicated to Heine's legacy. In previous years, Heine's books, including collections of his works, were published multiple times in Russia. The author of this narrative, Lev Kopalev (1912-1997), was a Russian writer, historian, publicist, human rights activist, Germanist, who did a lot to expand and deepen the cultural dialogue between Russia and Germany. The book is dedicated to the life and creative path of the great German poet. In an informal manner, it tells the story of the development of the poet's creative gift, reveals the drama of the man and artist's fate, resurrects the complex and troubled times that Heine faced, and brings to life the images of people who surrounded the poet. "Heine in Russia" is the theme of the Appendix. The publishing house expresses sincere gratitude to the director of the Heinrich Heine Institute in Düsseldorf, Mr. Josef A. Kruze, for his assistance in preparing illustrations for the book based on the exhibits of the exhibition "Heinrich Heine. Life and Work," held at the State Museum of A.S. Pushkin in Moscow (museum director E.A. Bogatyrev, deputy director N.I. Mikhailova, to whom the publishing house is also grateful for their help and support).
