Alexander Kuprin's novella "The Pit," written by 1909, became a real explosive bomb among critics and readers at the beginning of the 20th century. Before us is a tragic and truthful story about the inhabitants of a brothel, whose lives were ultimately destroyed by a combination of circumstances. The intertwining of the characters of the girls with the characters of the clients, brightly illuminated by the artificial lights of fate at night, helps us understand how difficult it was for women at that time. It took Alexander Ivanovich Kuprin about six years to create this work, where extremely truthful, laid bare stories presented to the reader could evoke primarily sympathy and understanding, and the complex theme would captivate to such an extent that there was no room left for condemnation.
