This monograph represents a poorly studied phenomenon of Russian literature - pilgrimage prose and is of its kind, the first systematic study of this artistic phenomenon. The content of pilgrimage prose becomes understood by the pilgrimage (repentance and prayer) human experience and the opening of the world as a sacred space. The artistic picture of the world covers history, ethnography, geography, history of religion, theology. The integrity of a diverse content gives the author"s worldview, the spiritual vector of which is asked by the Christian Orthodox faith. Pilgrim prose XIX century. Reflected the religious and spiritual foundations of the Russian Orthodox culture, represented by the creators of the authors from all sections of the Russian society, was evidenced by the unity of the value and religious and aesthetic foundations of the national spiritual culture and the presence of spiritual continuity in Russian society. The work covered the work of a number of forgotten writers, the content of religious and aesthetic concepts and categories, such as the sacred space, religious ecphrasis, Easterness, presents the methodology for the study of pilgrimage literature as the phenomenon of spiritual prose.
