A series of essays and notes presented in this book reveals some of the key plots of Russian intellectual history of that time related to the issue of the place and the appointment of Russia, that is, about its possible future, conceivable through the past.
In the first book of the series, the main attention is paid to such figures as Pyotr Chaadaev, Nikolai Poleva, Ivan Aksakov, Yuri Samarin, Konstantin Pobedonostsev, Afanasy Shchapov and Dmitry Shipov. People of different philosophical and political views, different origin and status, different fate - they were all directly or in absentia and remain participants in the continuing Russian conversation.
