The Museum "Garage" published a new translation of Edward V. Said "Orientalism that has already become the classic work. The focus of the author of the study is the genealogy of the European thought about the "East", the functioning of this speculative concept and its connection with reality. The author in detail characterizes the possible origins of this concept, raising the problem of the "canon". But the main trick of his reasoning is focused on the complex relations of three structures: power, academic knowledge and art in the reasoning and actions of various figures of politics, science and literature in the 19th century. Said proves that intertextual interaction formed the idea ("Platonic Essence") "East" - an image that was only strengthened from generation to generation as the opposing idea of "us" (Europeans) This confrontation was associated with the subordination of the territories, the need to speak "for" colonized peoples, formulating their "rules of the game" by metropolis and their representatives. All these ideas were reflected in reality - in wars, colonialists, the activities of colonial administrations, and later in the implementation of large strategic projects, for example, in the construction of the Suez Canal. The author finds the connection of these ideas with the modern world, for example, with American politics in the Middle East.
