Charles Louis Montesquieu is a glorified philosopher and encyclopedist of the Enlightenment, a harbinger of the French revolution and one of the initiators of the doctrine of liberalism. His central work “On the Spirit of Laws”, on which Montesquieu worked for several decades, immediately after the publication was included in the Roman Church in the list of prohibited books. Despite this ban, the treatise instantly gained wide fame and was translated into all European languages. Written in an exciting, intelligible manner (Montesquieu was a brilliant writer, whose syllable, among others, was highly appreciated by A. S. Pushkin), the book defends the fundamental principles of political freedom and equality of all people
