The Russian translation of "meetings with the Shestov" Benjamen Fondan is a long -awaited book for all lovers of Russian philosophy. The Fondan recorded his conversations with his friend and teacher Lev Isaakovich Shestov for several years in the mid-1930s, but for the first time they saw the light only in 1982.
It seems, however, that this book is important not only as a document from the history of Russian philosophy. Jehuda Leib Schwartzman and Benjamin Veksler, better known under their pseudonyms as Shestov and Fontan, were Jews. In their dialogs, the Jewish theme is not touched on so often, usually in passing, at the level of jokes, funny stories - or, conversely, when discussing pressing political problems. However, it is hardly possible to not notice a kind of Jewish note that sounds in this text even where we do not find anything specifically Jewish.
This is not surprising. In the writings of the Russian-Jewish philosopher-exposureist Shestov, adogmatism and irrationalism are convincingly combined with the assertion of the absolute meaning of the biblical faith ("Jerusalem"), contrasted by the Greek-European rational thinking with its primacy of the mind ("Athens")
At one time, the Grosharim publishing house published books in the Alef and "Bet" series - research in Jewish mysticism and philosophy. We continue to publish in the series "Gimel" texts and research of the same subject
