Leviathan Thomas Hobbes is a classic work of the English thinker of the XVII century. It gives the basic principles of his philosophy and teachings about the state. The book consists of four parts. The first part - “About man” - contains a psychological theory of education and development of human knowledge and a description of passions, morals and religious beliefs of people. The second part - “On the state” - characterizes the role, functions and tasks of the state, as well as forms of government. The third part - “On the Christian State” - speaks of the essence of the Christian state and the role of the Church. In the fourth part - “On the Kingdom of Darkness” - Hobbes criticizes the scholastic philosophy and the Church, which he considers as the culprit of all the evils and disasters of the state. The first Russian translation of Leviathan, made in 1864, was confiscated and destroyed by royal censorship.
