“The floor and character” of the Weinger (1880-1903) is the famous philosophical and psychological study, the creator of which broke all previously existing gender stereotypes and wondered what place the man and woman occupy in the universe. The Austrian philosopher came to the conclusion that this question applies primarily to each individual person. The bisexuality of the human being as a physiologically given property has been revealed to it and, even more important, the norm of the psyche: all male features, although in a weak, barely developed state, can be found both in female, and vice versa, the signs of a woman in her aggregate are contained in their own. A man, albeit in a very unformed form. One of the basic structures of the psyche was allocated?- the unity of the male and female in it. And this is long before the archetypes of Jung, before work on gender problems, to the fundamental discoveries of biology of the end of the second millennium.
The meaning of this book for the formation of the consciousness of a person of the twentieth century is difficult to overestimate. The main work of Weinger became the epitaph of the gallant age, a signal that the two sexes came together in a direct confrontation or in the search for a new union, harmony on other grounds. And it was super -chic: not without reason during the first three decades after the release, sensational work was published in dozens of circulations in most European languages.
The book proposed is the text of one of the very first Russian publications (1903) with the most restored comments that reveal the context of that time and make it possible to look at the author’s personality at a fundamentally new angle. The accused of feminine both contemporaries and descendants, Weininger only pronounced the merciless accurate sentence of his era and, like no one else, managed to catch the sinister Zeitgeist that had just begun for the 20th century.
