Michelle Montigne “Experiments”
Michel Equem de Montaigne (1533–1592) - French writer and philosopher of the Renaissance, lived a quiet, poor life, rarely went beyond the limits of his native town and the family estate, was alien to the political and religious storms of his time - and even politely rejected the proposal of Henry IV to become his adviser. The main work of Montaania - the “experiments”, on which the philosopher worked for 10 years - was written in a lively and free form, without a clear plan. Public administration, relations between people, power over their own will - this and much more the philosopher considers from the point of view of his own experience and accompanies the witty remarks and quotes of ancient and modern authors. The name of the chapters accurately reflects their content: “On friendship”, “On fear”, “On drunkenness”, “On repentance”, “On glory”, etc.
“Experiments” - a book quoted by Shakespeare, with whom Pascal and Descartes fiercely argued, and admired by Voltaire. A book that is still included in the program of the philosophy course of all universities in the world
