"Confession" is a well -known work of the great Russian writer L.N. Tolstoy (1828-1910) In it, the author tells with its maximum frankness about his life, trying to summarize many years of internal work and express a new understanding of the meaning and significance of life, suffered in painful and passionate searches. L.N. Tolstoy sets out the history of his spiritual searches in sufficient detail. It goes through the thorny path from superficial youthful nihilism and overtime to the existential crisis of adulthood, which was associated with the awareness of the inevitability of death, which makes in vain any human aspirations. The question that haunted the famous writer was posed with maximum simplicity and honesty: does life have a meaning that is not destroyed by the inevitability of death? L.N. Tolstoy understood that serving in art, the progress of mankind and surrounding people loses the foundation without understanding the general meaning of life as an ontological phenomenon
