Frederick II Hohenzollern (1712-1786), “King-Soldat” and “King-Philosof” is a truly unique person, the founder of Prussian-German statehood, the ruler of Prussia, who entered the world history under the name Frederick the Great. In addition to the famous victories, Frederick left behind an extensive, more than thirty volumes, a creative heritage regarding almost all sides of his life.
King Frederick was a brave warrior and was not afraid to argue with the authorities - what"s on the battlefield, on the pages of books. Even in his youth, he drew attention to the work of Niccolo Machiavelli “Sovereign” - one of the most famous in the history of civilization of treatises devoted to the management of the state and duties of the monarch. Then the prince, Frederick, despite his young age, boldly entered the correspondence polemic with the great cynical Florentine. The result of this dispute was the book “Anti-Machiavelli”, in which the future king formulated the new principles of the monarchy. Maybe precisely because of the next 20 years, Frederick the Great turned Prussia from the little principality into one of the strongest states of Europe. An important detail: Anti-Makiavelli treatise was edited and anonymously published by the Grand Voltaire himself, with whom Frederick was already in a lively correspondence
