Professor Stroll (1921-2013) was a specialist in the field of philosophy of language, epistemology and metaphysics. He also played an important role in the formation of the history of analytical philosophy of the 20th century as a field of science. For most of his career, Stroll expanded and adapted the methods of Ludwig Wittgenstein and J. L. Austin to solve a wide range of issues, including an explanation of the conditions under which the views of people can be reliable and reasonable. His enthusiasm for Wittgenstein was as sincere and contagious as his struggle against epistemological skepticism. His philosophical method included thorough and insightful attention to individual situations, the “case method” - which Professor Al Martinich describes his former student as “a philosophical analogue of descriptions of things and events in the style of Marseille Proust”. Professor Stroll"s publishing career lasted more than fifty years. All this time he was an extremely prolific philosopher, author or co -author of twenty books and about one hundred and fifty articles. He spent most of his philosophical career within the walls of the University of California, San Diego
