One of the most outstanding French writers of the 19th century, Henri Marie Bayl, who wrote under the pseudonym Stendhal, during his lifetime, he did not enjoy either the recognition of criticism or the success of a wide reader. His magnificent novels, the novels “Red and Black” (1830), “Parm abode” (1839) went unnoticed, only occasionally causing reviews, far from always favorable. The writer was philosophical about this. Nevertheless, Merim, who experienced the influence of Stendhal, appreciated him, Balzac admired him, Goethe and Pushkin with pleasure read his novel “Red and Black”. And in the 20th century, Stendhal firmly took the place in the pantheon of the classics of European literature. A special place in Stodal"s work is occupied by the book “On Love” (1822) This is not a work of art, but a kind of treatise on the oddities and features of love, its phases (admiration, origin of love, crystallization, hope, doubt, etc), about the first impression, about the specifics of manifestation of love feelings in various countries
