In the book of the famous St. Petersburg art critic A.V. Stepanov is neither historical-architectural nor local history studies. Without believing their significance, the author is focused on the other: his goal is to overcome the museum -museum -related attitude to the architecture of the city, to offer the reader the path to independent experience and understanding of architectural phenomena, to make the architecture of St. Petersburg animated and understandable to people who do not have special knowledge. Turning to the phenomenological method, A.V. Stepanov discovers the most soulful insights in poetic works. Each work of architecture for him is a person with their own character, everyone has their own Aidos. Entering in interaction, they form eloquent dumb scenes. The protagonist of these scenes is always a person who includes architecture in his life world and, depending on his own spiritual warehouse and social role, prefers this or that role from the author proposed
