Alexei Nikolaevich Tolstoy (1883–1945) was one of the prominent Russian writers of the first half of the 20th century, author of historical, science fiction, and social novels, stories, and tales.
The novel "Peter the Great," despite being unfinished, can confidently be called the main work about the era of Peter the Great—one of the most significant figures in Russian history.
Where will the reforms of the transforming tsar lead? The second and third books of the novel, included in this volume, cover only six years—a short period in terms of history, but it was a turning point in Peter's reign. It was during these years that the policies were formed that set the country's development path. The introduction of a new calendar and European clothing, shaving beards, and regulating the celebration of the New Year caused confusion and discontent among the people. The construction of the navy and military campaigns required funds, which were replenished through tax increases. Instead of admiration, the tsar was increasingly called the Antichrist.
