Alexei Nikolaevich Tolstoy (1883-1945) was one of the prominent Russian writers of the first half of the 20th century, author of historical, science fiction, and social novels, stories, and tales.
The novel "Peter the Great," despite being unfinished, can confidently be called the main work about the era of Peter the Great - one of the most significant figures in Russian history.
Who was Peter the Great? The first book included in this volume leaves more questions than answers. It covers the period between two streltsy uprisings - less than twenty years, but what years they were! They encompass the struggle for power between the Miloslavsky and Naryshkin families, the coming of age of the young tsar who went from a playful army to a real military campaign and a grand embassy to Europe. The common Moscow people see only the destruction of their traditional way of life in the tsar's reforms.
