A. N. Tolstoy began writing the novel 'Peter the Great' in 1929. 'The first decade of the 18th century,' he noted, 'presents an amazing picture of the explosion of creative forces, energy, and entrepreneurship. The old world is cracking and crumbling. Europe, expecting something completely different, looks in amazement and fear at the emerging Russia...'. In his work, Tolstoy used a variety of sources: the research of historians, notes and letters from Peter's contemporaries - Russians and foreigners, military reports and decrees of that time, diplomatic correspondence, judicial archives, and literary monuments of the era, as well as folklore material, which vividly and organically fits into the artistic canvas of the novel, forming an integral whole.
The novel is dedicated to a pivotal period in Russian history and the fate of the first Russian emperor and great reformer. It covers the time from Peter's childhood and youth to the beginning of his transformative activities, his first military campaigns, victories of the Russian army over the Swedes, the founding of St. Petersburg, and ends with the Russian troops taking Narva. Tolstoy created an extensive gallery of vivid, memorable characters, vividly reflecting the unrestrained energy and incredible scope of Peter's activities, his uncompromising struggle against old Russia, symbolized by the Streltsy Uprising and the schismatic movement, showing how the Russian state developed and strengthened in internal struggles and wars for independence. 'To understand the secret of the Russian people, their greatness, one must know their past well and deeply: our history, its fundamental knots, the tragic creative epochs in which the Russian character was formed,' the writer asserted.
