In 1842-1844, Lieutenant of the Navy Lavrentiy Alekseevich Zagorsky (1808-1890) traveled on foot, by dog sled, and by kayak, covering a vast distance across the then Russian America - that is how the possessions of the Russian Empire on the North American continent were called until the mid-19th century, which is not quite familiar today. Zagorsky was the first in world science to compile a detailed description of the deep territories of Alaska, collected valuable ethnographic information about the indigenous inhabitants of the peninsula, indicated the locations of their settlements, and compiled an accurate map of the main rivers and the coast of the Bering Sea between their mouths. The diaries that Zagorsky kept during the journey became an invaluable source of information on the geography, history, and ethnography of the indigenous peoples of North America, and the valuable exhibits brought by the researcher enriched the collections of museums in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
