"The Pedagogical Poem" is the most famous work of the Soviet educator A. Makarenko. The book tells the story of the establishment in 1920 of the M. Gorky Children's Labor Colony near Poltava, whose wards were juvenile delinquents and homeless children. Having no prior experience working with difficult teenagers, the author developed his own system based on three principles: labor, play, and the influence of the collective. It is the collective that should shape the personality of each child, teach them to take responsibility for themselves and their comrades, and guide and support them in their individual development. Through respect and discipline, the educator gradually gains the trust of his charges, and socially useful work inspires and unites the children. Throughout the narrative, the author does not hide his doubts and fears, shares reflections and reasoning, acknowledges and analyzes mistakes, making his experience understandable and relatable to modern educators. After the book was published, the educational novel became a classic of pedagogical literature, and the author's methodology guided generations of Russian teachers. The book is aimed at a wide range of readers, especially educators, parents, and students of pedagogical universities.
