"The Pedagogical Poem" is a widely known and most significant work of the Soviet educator and writer Anton Semenovich Makarenko (1888-1939), recognized worldwide. Through the means of artistic prose, the author describes the establishment of the Gorky colony near Poltava (1920-1928) and its rich, sometimes dramatic life. A. S. Makarenko successfully reformed and reintegrated underage orphans and delinquents into full cultural and social life through feasible socially beneficial work, thoughtful and rational involvement of the wards in collective management, unity of trust and demand for all members of the collective, including teachers and hired craftsmen. The author spent ten years (1925-1935) creating "The Pedagogical Poem." The fate of this work turned out to be complex. In the 1930s, it was removed from libraries, but in the post-war period, it was published in huge print runs.
