This book is the result of perennial studies of the author in the field of functional stylistics, reflection over the place and character of stylistic changes in the overall picture of the evolution of the Russian language of the 20th century. The paper discusses the essence of stylistic opposition in the language, contains abundant, but at the same time carefully selected and commented language material illustrating theoretical provisions. The book is closely intertwined by a linguistic analysis and study of a variety of conditions for the implementation of the stylistic resources of the Russian language, the history of the problems of stylistics and modern research in this area. But the main goal is not to reflect different points of view on the subject and task of stylistics as a certain section of the linguistics, but in the formulation of certain patterns in the use of speaking and writing stylistic means of the language.
