Patriarch Hermogen is one of the key figures of our story. In the era of the Great Disame of the early XVII century, when the Moscow power was almost disappeared from the map of the world, it was his will that helped to keep Russian statehood from the final collapse. And it may be very possible that neither the first nor the second land militia, nor the liberation of Moscow from the Poles, nor the advantage of the throne of the Romanovs would have happened if the old man"s shallow body could have endowed the blows of fate who fell into him. For a whole year, he was an impregnable stronghold - the only one in Russia, which the enemies could not take.
